Show and Sell: Art in the Garden by local High School Students
Whitehern Historic House & Garden
Join us in the garden for music and a show of high school art. Ruby McQuesten won prizes as a student at the Hamilton Art School in the early 1900s. Tour the home to learn about Ruby's role in the family and to see her art, then visit the garden and buy a piece of art for your own home. Tea, lemonade and treats are available for purchase. Art prices will vary.

The McQuesten's Childhood Christmas

Enjoy this special time of year as the McQuestens look back on the Christmas of their childhood. Once a year we reveal the family's toys under a tree adorned with whimsical decorations in the style of the 1880s. The table is set with the china they used for Christmas and New Year's from the 1850s when they visited Grandpa, to the 1930s when Tom entertained his fellow politicians. Cedar roping and satin ribbon complete the picture.

Families are invited to explore Whitehern and discover the rooms transformed into illustrations from the beloved Christmas classic: A Visit from St Nicholas. Original toys, storybooks and postcards on display will reveal how the McQuesten children experienced Christmas in the 1880s. Visit the Stable to hear period Christmas carols, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and take advantage of a unique photo opportunity to have your family appear as an illustration in the story, complete with kerchiefs & night caps. Leave with a parting gift of a recipe for making sugarplums.
